If you grew up on grandma’s freshly picked pears, its more than likely that they were picked from a Pineapple pear tree out back. This hardy pear cultivar is tough to kill and produces large amounts of excellent hard-cooking fruit that have a slight pineapple taste. The Pineapple pear tree needs around 200 chill hours, thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil and full sunlight, and is more tolerant of heavy clays than most fruit trees. It is also fire blight resistant. The Pineapple pear tree blooms in early to late spring and begins to ripen in July through August. It’s self-fertile but for better results and more fruit production, cross pollinate with two or more pear varieties.
